Ethics and moral development respond to peers

Respond to Peers: Review your classmates’ posts, and respond to at least two of your peers. In each response, provide comments that prompt further critical thinking and insight on your classmate’s perspective on ethical values as they relate to their personal, academic, and professional lives. Each participation post should be a minimum of 75 words.

To be ethical is to up-hold expected standards and or guidelines, ethics are belief a person lives by. Right or wrong good or bad are the decisions/choices a person make. For instance, personal ethics comes from family, religion and or organizations. Academic ethics are the guidelines that Ashford gives us as students, to which we abide by or disregard. Ethics in professional growth is performing to the standards of a person’s education.

An ethical dilemma I encountered was when I was asked to lie about my boss’s conversation when he was brought up on charges of sexual harassment. I was asked to testify to his boss that he did not make sexual comments and gestures to a lady in the hallway. However, I could not lie because I did hear him say the comments in the hallway but I couldn’t say who it was directed to because there were several ladies in the group and I was not one of them, I just happen to be walking by.

At this time, I can’t say that my general education classes influenced my ethical values in any way. The reason I say this is because I try really hard to live by my Christian beliefs and while striving to live by them, they cover every area of my life. I am inclined to do what is morally right based on the teaching I received from the Word of God.

A college educated person may have different duties to society than someone who is not educated because of the knowledge the educated person receives from his college schooling. A college educated person should be obligated to help in ways that he or she has gain knowledge. A college educated person will make life worth-while for his or her family as well as try to help others he or she come in contact with, Jwood00. (2012).

According to the Cambridge Dictionary, the definition of  the word “ethical” is “relating to beliefs about what is morally right and wrong.” Therefore, what it means to be ethical can vary widely among peolple, and even be a very personally developed opinion on the concept.

What it means to be ethical as it related to personal academic and professional growth: It is my belief that in all terms, the word ethical relates to honesty. To have personal, academic and professional growth I feel that one must put in hard work, be respectful, communicate well, and progress in their growth through honorable ways.

Provide at least one ethical dilemma you have encountered and describe how the issue was resolved: One ethical dilemma I experienced is one that is not actually that unusual. Walking through a store once, someone stopped me asking if a $20 bill was mine, if I had dropped it. IT coluld have been mine. I did have cash in my pocket. However I was almost 100% positive it was not mine. I easily could have said “yes! I dropped it thank you so much” and earned an easy $20. However, my moral compass would not let me do so feeling so strongly that it was not mine, especially when they were so ind to try to return it themselves. Instead of lie, I told the truth and said “maybe, but im not sure, so you keep it.” They were  thrilled and I felt much better.

Describe how your general education courses have influenced your ethical values: My general education courses have taught me so much about the world. I have learned about so many different cultures, places around the world, perspectives and lifestyles. I have learned effective ways to communicate and more. However, I think what is most important in shaping your ethical values is learning about yourself. Through general education courses I have learned what MY beliefs and opinions are. I have learned what I enjoy and what I do not. I havelearned how to respectfully communicate my opinions and be a successful person through honest means.

Explain why a college-educated person might have different duties to society than someone not as educated: Those who are college educated typically have more of an exposure to a variety of diverse cultures and perspectiveds. They carry knowledge to help them analyze the world, and problem solve effectively. This makes their duties to society different in that they must share their knowledge and skills they have learned in order to help make the world more educated and a better place itself.
